ASPECTS OF SEDIMENT DIAGENESIS AND TAPHONOMY AT HOLME-NEXT-THE-SEA, NORFOLK

Author(s): Matt Canti

Interpretative details of the timber circle excavation at Holme-next-the-Sea are discussed in relation to the chemical system operating on the foreshore. Evidence from field examination and X-radiographs is brought together to explain the main oxidation/reduction changes and their effect on sediment colour. Different sequences of construction process and subsequent redox reactions are postulated to explain the variations in morphology. The balance of these arguments favours the view that the apparent trench shapes seen in the sections are the result of infill differences being preserved by their physical effect on redox processes and thus on colour. Possible explanations for sections not showing trench shapes are discussed.
