TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF OAK TIMBERS FROM THE CHURCH OF ST SWITHIN, CLUNBURY, SHROPSHIRE

Author(s): Ian Tyers

Clunbury Church has recently undergone remedial repair work to the roofs and tower. Some of the structural elements of the decorated nave roof exposed during this required replacement and a tree-ring dating programme was commissioned by English Heritage to help inform repair decisions. The results indicate the nave roof is an almost complete survival from c AD 1494/5. No re-used timbers were positively identified, however one timber which probably relates to the removal of a dormer window in the nineteenth century was identified.
