Sevenscore Barn, Ebbsfleet Lane North, Sevenscore, Ramsgate, Kent: Tree-Ring Analysis and Radiocarbon Wiggle-matching of Oak Timbers

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cathy Tyers, A Bayliss, Silvia Bollhalder, Irka Hajdas, Lukas Wacker

Tree-ring analysis was undertaken on 21 samples from timbers thought to be associated with the primary construction, as well as from timbers considered to be related to a potentially later rebuilding of the aisles. This resulted in the construction of two site sequences, the 168-ring SVNSSQ01, which contained 11 samples, and the 71-ring SVNSSQ02, which contained two samples. Attempts to date these site sequences and the ungrouped samples by dendrochronology were unsuccessful, although the relative dating obtained indicates that at least some of the timbers considered secondary are coeval with timbers associated with the primary construction. Radiocarbon dating was undertaken on ten single-ring samples from SVN-S04, the longest tree-ring series in site sequence SVNSSQ01. Wigglematching of these results indicates that the timbers in this site sequence were felled in the AD 1660s or AD 1670s.
