THE HUMAN REMAINS FROM THE GOBLIN WORKS, ASHSTEAD, SURREY.

Author(s): T Waldron

The human remains from this site comprised thirteen pagan burials, six skeletons of executed criminals, a further four skeletons which had probably been executed and a number of skeletons of uncertain provenance. A total of at least thirty six individuals was present. Of this number, seventeen were male, six female and fourchildren; the remainder were all adults of unknown sex. None of the executed criminals had any skeletal evidence from which their mode of death could be determined. Two of the skeletons had osteoarthritis, two had fractured clavicles, two had spondylolysis, one had spina bifida occulta and there was one with a shortened tibia which might have been caused by poliomyelitis. The skeleton with the shortened tibia also had heterotopic maxillary canine teeth.
