Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from the Cottage, Speldhurst, Kent

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cliff Litton

Analysis was undertaken on six samples from timbers of this house. A further ten were rejected as unsuitable. Unfortunately, no definitive grouping between the samples occurred and attempts to date the samples individually were unsuccessful. In this case, tree-ring dating has proved unsuccessful, and the dating of this house remains on stylistic grounds only, to the mid-seventeeth century. The inability to date this building is most likely due to the short-ring sequence of the samples, a problem in this region in the post-medieval period.
