TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS FROM ASTLEY CASTLE, ASTLEY, WARWICKSHIRE

Author(s): Robert Howard, R R Laxton, Cliff Litton

Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken of samples from twenty-five oak timbers at Astley Castle, Warwickshire. Two site chronologies were formed from this material. The first site chronology, of 133 rings, is composed entirely of samples from one phase of construction and spans the period AD 1495 - 1627. Three samples in this site chronology have complete sapwood, strongly suggesting that all the timbers of this phase were felled in AD 1627. The second site chronology, of 59 rings, appears to be from another phase of construction but does not date.
