BRODSWORTH HALL ENVIRONMENTAL COLLOQUIUM

Author(s): B Knight

In winter, conservation heating is recommended for Brodsworth Hall, whereby the relative humidity in the house is maintained at 50-65% by the use of humidistats, while the temperature is allowed to vary freely between 5oC and 20oC. This should ensure that damage to the building and its historic contents is minimised. A sophisticated building management system will be needed to ensure that local variations in RH do not occur near each heat emitter, and that high surface temperatures are avoided. Continuous environmental monitoring will be required. In summer, the relative humidity may rise above 65%. Dehumidifiers may be necessary to control the RH since further heating would be undesirable. Visible and UV light levels will need to be controlled, and continuous monitoring for insect pests will be needed.
