Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from 33 Strand Street, Sandwich, Kent
Author(s): Alison Arnold, R R Laxton, Cliff Litton
Sixteen samples were taken from oak timbers at these premises for dendrochronological analysis; of these four were later rejected as they had too few rings for secure dating. As a result of the grouping procedure, three site sequences were constructed from eight samples. Site sequence SNDCSQ01, of 99 rings, contains two samples and was matched at a first-ring date of AD 1335 and a last-ring date of AD 1433. Interpretation of the heartwood/sapwood ring dates of the samples concerned points towards an estimated felling date for the two timbers represented within the range AD 1442-62. The second site sequence, SNDCSQ02, of 73 rings, contains four samples and the third site sequence, SNDCSQ03, also of 73 rings, contains two samples. Neither of these site sequences could be matched and these samples remain undated. Attempts to date the remaining samples individually were unsuccessful.
