Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from the Riding House Roof, Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cliff Litton

A total of 12 core samples was obtained from a limited range of timbers in the roof space of the riding house at Welbeck Abbey. Three of these samples were unsuitable for tree-ring dating and were rejected from the analysis. Of the nine samples remaining six could be formed into a site chronology 79 years long, dated as spanning the years AD 1530 to AD 1608. Interpretation of the heartwood/sapwood boundaries on those samples where it exists indicates that the dated timbers represented all have a felling date in the range AD 1619 to AD 1644. Such a felling date range is consistent with the construction date suggested by the documentary sources in the form of plans and drawings dated to AD 1622-25.
