The Gildhouse, Poundstock, near Bude, Cornwall : Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard

Dendrochronological analysis of 18 out of 27 samples taken from a range of timbers in this building has resulted in the construction of a single site chronology, PDSASQ01, comprising 13 samples, this having an overall length of 139 rings. These rings can be dated as spanning the years AD 1405–1543. Interpretation of the sapwood on the dated samples would indicate that, while it is possible there is some variation in the felling of the roof and floor timbers, all are of mid-sixteenth century date. It is likely that all the roof timbers were cut in, or close to, AD 1543. It is possible that the dated floor timbers were cut at this time too, and certainly no later than AD 1558.
