Archaeomagnetism of Hearth 2034 Saint Giles Hospital, Catterick Bridge
Author(s): M Noel
A detailed archaeomagnetic study of millstone hearth 2034, St Giles Hospital, Brompton Bridge, was carried out in order to determine when the feature was last fired. The remanent magnetisation of a total of 23 oriented samples were measured and found to contain a geomagnetically aligned thermoremanence. By comparing archaeomagnetic directions retained by individual blocks it was discovered that some, but not all, of the fragments' movement has occurred after the last firing. Comparison of the mean archaeomagnetic direction in the feature with the UK master curve suggests that the hearth was last used 1490-1530 AD.
