HARDHAM CAMP COLDWALTHAM, WEST SUSSEX: REPORT ON GEOPHYSICAL SURVEYS, OCTOBER 1997

Author(s): Andy Payne

A geophysical survey was carried out at Hardham Camp, one of a series of Roman Stations situated on Stane Street in West Sussex. The aim of the survey was to provide evidence of the precise form and extent of the monument to support a reassessment of the site by the Monuments Protection Programme for the purpose of reviewing the scheduled area. Despite a generally poor geophysical response, the survey successfully defined the layout of the monument in relation to Stane Street revealing that it is rather more regular and symmetrical in plan than previously thought. The survey also provided new detail of the form of the defensive earthworks and evidence of features in the interior although no clear indications of any substantial masonry buildings were detected. Archaeological activity in the form of ditches, pits and smaller enclosures was also shown to continue beyond the boundaries of the enclosed area to the east and west along the route of Stane Street. The survey thus significantly extends knowledge of a previously poorly understood Roman site of considerable importance.
