Middleton Dean, Ilderton, Northumberland: an Iron Age Hillfort: Survey Report

Author(s): Stewart Ainsworth, Abby Hunt

In April 2003, English Heritage undertook an archaeological investigation and analytical field survey of an Iron Age hillfort at Middleton Dean, in Northumberland. Remains from three principal periods of activity were identified: (1) Iron Age - the rampart, ditch, counterscarp bank, and entrance. No features indicative of associated occupation could be identified (2) Romano-British period - a settlement was established within the interior. Evidence of phasing within this settlement is observable (3) Medieval/post-medieval period - two shielings and three animal enclosures were constructed within the hillfort interior. Plough furrows and a low ridge indicate that part of the interior was used as a field and that it is probably contemporary with the areas of ridge and furrow ploughing immediately to the west and south.
