Clay Tobacco Pipes from Excavations at Silkstone, South Yorkshire

Author(s): David Higgins

The clay pipes from the excavation of a late 17th century glassworking and 18th century pottery production sites are examined. The site produced 98 fragments of clay pipe, including 15 bowl fragments. Five previously unrecorded stamps were identified. Most of the clay pipes were recovered from contexts associated with pottery production. The clay pipes suggest that pottery production began in the early 18th century. The small number of clay fragments from contexts associated with glass working date to the late 17th century (and possibly early 18th century).
