Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from Finchale Priory Farmhouse, Finchale, Co Durham

Author(s): David Higgins, Robert Howard, R Kent, R R Laxton, Cliff Litton

Twenty-three samples from the roof and one sample from a ground-floor ceiling beam at Finchale Priory Farmhouse, Co Durham, were analysed by tree-ring dating. This analysis produced a single site chronology of twenty-one samples, 196 rings long, and spanning the period AD 1174 to AD 1369. Interpretation of the sapwood on the dated samples suggests that all the dated roof timbers were cut in a single felling operation in AD 1369. The single timber from the ground-floor ceiling remains undated.
