ANIMAL BONES FROM EXCAVATIONS AT OLD GRAPE LANE, TRENCHES A AND B, THE LANES, CARLISLE, 1982

Author(s): S Stallibrass

This is the first of three archive reports acting as interims for the five sites that will be covered in Volume 1 of the publication report on The Lanes. The urban excavations at OGL A recovered material dating mainly to the earlier Roman (i.e. first and second centuries AD) and the Medieval (12th/13th centuries) periods. During the Roman period, the area was part of the civilian settlement and the animal bones will form a contrast to the large quantities of material already recovered from military and quasi-military areas of the city. However, the sample sizes from this individual excavation are insufficient to warrant full comparisons either spatially or chronologically. This archive report is more a catalogue and record than an analysis. Due to the imposition of severe time constraints, only part of the material could be looked at, and only certain aspects of the material could be recorded, let alone analysed. The failings of this work serve to underline the necessity for full consultation before post-excavation programmes are determined.
