Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, R R Laxton, Cliff Litton
The Nottingham University Tree-ring Dating Laboratory has investigated a number of buildings in Newark, most recently as part of an English Heritage project. The results from this project and of reanalysis of earlier work are outlined in this report. Timbers from the rear of The Old White Hart were dated to AD 1312/3, and from the front to AD 1463. The buildings of 40-44 Castlegate, 22-24 Kirkgate, and 40-44 Cartergate were constructed from timbers felled in AD 1330, AD 1337, and AD 1353 respectively. The Old Tithe Barn was built from timbers estimated to have been felled some time between AD 1410-30. The crown-post roof of 39 Kirkgate is built from timbers felled in AD 1436-47, whilst at 37 Kirkgate three phases were identified, the earliest a timber felled AD 1196-AD 1216, another in AD 1505-25, and three rafters felled AD 1695-AD 1711. In Stodman Street, the Woolpack Inn was built from timbers felled in spring AD 1452. The front of the Governor's House was built from timbers felled in AD 1458-77, the rear was built a couple of years later, with possible modifications being carried out in the sixteenth century. Timbers from the Bede House Chapel were dated to AD 1554, and timbers from three properties on Baldertongate were also dated to the sixteenth century. Timbers from 5 Church Street were dated to AD 1655 and those from The Old Swan and Salmon to AD 1656. A raised cruck roof in a rear extension at this latter building was built from timbers felled in AD 1745. Another raised cruck at Potterdike House, in Lombard Street, was built from timbers felled in AD 1740. Analysis of timbers at 17-21 Boar Lane produced dates in the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, with the earlier dates thought to indicate re-used timbers. Dates gained for timbers at 6-12 Chain Lane suggest construction began in the late-seventeenth or beginning of the eighteenth century continuing until AD 1753, or soon after. One timber at 55 Millgate was felled in the period AD 1759-79. Not all of the buildings chosen fo
