Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from Littlebourne Barn, near Canterbury, Kent
Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cliff Litton
Dendrochronological analysis undertaken on forty-four samples from this barn resulted in the construction of three dated site sequences. Site sequences KLBASQ01 spans the period AD 1232-96, and KLBASQ02 spans the period AD 1190-1297. The five samples contained within these site sequences are from timbers of the primary construction and were felled in AD 1307-27. Site sequence KLBASQ03, contains nineteen samples, and spans the period AD 1382-1582. Two samples, from the crown-post roof, were felled in AD 1525, with a further twelve roof timbers and a stud from the rebuilt south wall also thought to have been felled at this time. A wall post is from a timber felled in AD 1582, with a second wall post and an arcade post also likely to have been felled at this time. Three further site sequences are undated. The core of the barn is built with timbers felled in AD 1307-27, with some inserted timbers of AD 1582. The crown-post roof timbers date to AD 1525. It was not possible to date the re-built south-west end, except for a reused timber in the wall probably felled in AD 1525, or the group of reused timbers thought to be associated with an earlier building.
