West Buckland School, West Buckland, Devon

The school was founded in 1858 at South Stoodleigh by J L Brereton for the education of the middle classes. This he saw as bridging a gap in the education system which he identified in his book 'County Education' published in 1874. This building dates from 1860-1. It was designed by R D Gould and enlarged to the rear in 1863 and 1871. The range to the west was completed in 1876 and an eastern range was added in 1933. It was a boarding school.
