Windlass, Penberth Cove, Cornwall

This capstan windlass was used for hauling fishing boats up the beach. It dates from the mid - late 19th century and was possibly a replacement or remodelling of an older structure. It took 8 men to turn the windlass and wind the rope attached to the boat around the capstan, pulling the boat up the beach.
