The monument includes the remains of part of an ore hearth smelt mill and a reverberatory smelt mill, as well as the extensive system of flues which includes two chimneys, several ramped access ways and part of a contemporary trackway. It is in six separate areas of protection.
The smelt mill structure is available to be viewed from the bottom of the embankment by the public during the opening hours of the business units which share the site. This is generally 8am to 5pm weekdays and 8am to 1pm Saturday. Access onto the consolidated structure (the embankment) itself can be arranged by appointment. There is an interpretation panel and digital interpretation available for mobile phones.
There are a number of business units at the Allen Mill site including, at time of publication, a café.
