Ayton Castle, Castle Rise

Ayton Castle, Castle Rise, West Ayton, Scarborough View on map

The earthworks of a medieval manorial centre and ruins of a later fortified tower house complex. The house is a rectangular, three storey structure built in stone and standing to its full height at the south east corner. The vaulted basement is intact, and many architectural details such as windows, doorways, stairs and floor and roof supports survive, providing evidence of the original layout.

The Castle is adjacent to a public right of way.


In the field to the east of Castle Rise, West Ayton. The Castle is adjacent to a public right of way. The A170 runs through the village. Rail: Seamer, 3 miles.
