Country house, c1716, contains an impressive Baroque interior exhibiting over one hundred 18th century portraits and some contemporary works in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery. A very high standard of craftsmanship is displayed throughout, most of the original work surviving with extremely fine woodcarving and other ornate decoration, and an unusual central corridor running the full length of the house. There is a fully equipped Victorian laundry and a working walled garden which supplies produce for the restaurant.

4 March - 30 June and 2 September - 5 November: open Tuesday to Sunday plus Bank Holidays, 10.30 - 5pm. 1 July - 1 September: open every day, 10.30 - 5pm. 6 November - 2 March 2018: weekends and Bank Holidays, 11 - 3.30pm.

  • Adult: £13.00 (house and grounds)
  • Child: £6.50 (house and grounds)
  • Other Charges: £32.50 (Family: 2 adults & 3 children or 1 adult & 4 children). Group: £9.80 adult, £4.90 child. reduced rate when arriving by cycle.


8 miles north west of York, 2 miles west of Shipton. Brown signposted on A19 north of York and A59 (toll bridge at Aldwark). Rail: York (approximately 10 miles). Bus: Stephensons/Hutchinson 31/A/X.
