Caston Village Cross, Village Green
Caston Village Cross, Village Green, The Street, Caston, Norfolk, NR17 1DD
Caston Village Cross (Scheduled Monument) is a good example of a medieval standing cross. Once numbering in the region of 12,000 in England, standing crosses served a variety of functions. Some were linked to particular saints, in order to invoke their support and protection. In churchyards they served as stations for outdoor processions or were used for preaching, public proclamation and penance, as well as defining rights of sanctuary.
