Forde Abbey, Chard

Forde Abbey, Chard, Somerset TA20 4LU View on map

Cistercian monastery founded in 1140 and dissolved in 1539 when the church was demolished. The monks quarters were converted in 1640 into an Italian style "palazzo" by Sir Edmund Prideaux. Interior has plaster ceilings and Mortlake tapestries.


Opening Arrangements

Gardens: daily, 10am - 4.30pm. House: 24 March - 30 October; Tuesday - Friday, Sunday & Bank Holiday Mondays 12pm - 4pm.

4 miles south-east of Chard off B3167. Rail: Crewkerne (7 miles).
