The gothic style Bono Retiro (a place of pleasant retirement) is one of a number of garden buildings set around a 17 acre lake in Hardwick Park. The 18th century landscape park and structures are being restored by Durham Country Council. The Bono Retiro has been consolidated as a ruin.


Opening Arrangements

Accessible on foot daily from 6.30am- 8pm.


Approximately 17 km (10.5 miles) from Durham City centre, 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from centre of Sedgefield. Off the A177 west of Sedgefield. Rail: Newton Aycliffe (6 miles), Durham (11 miles), Darlington (13 miles).

Parking Spaces


Car parking charges apply. £2 up to 2 hours, £3 for over 2 hours. Car parking area open 6.30am to dusk.
