St John the Baptist, Upton Bishop, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire HR9 7UL View on map

Grade I listed 12th and 14th century parish church built of local stone with a Saxon doorway. Restoration of 1862 and south vestry added in 1880. Fragment of sculptural relief said to be from a Roman tombstone incorporated in to the south wall of chancel. Hymn writer Frances Havergal visited while her brother was the incumbent.

Daily, approximately 9am-6pm or dusk (whichever is earlier).


3 miles east of Stone. Leave Stone on B5027 Uttoxeter Road, after 3 miles turn left at crossroads onto B5066 signposted Meir Heath. In the village, B5066 turns left, carry straight on. Church is 100 yards on the right on Cresswell Road. Rail: Stone (5 miles), Blythe Bridge (6 miles), Stafford (10 miles). Bus: D&G route 249 from Longton (infrequent and not Sundays or Bank Holidays).
