St Mary the Virgin, Church Street

St Mary the Virgin, Church Street, Chard, Somerset TA20 2DW View on map

Grade I listed building. Some Norman remains, but mostly 15th century. Visitors are surprised to see the rather dumpy perpendicular building, with its battlements, buttresses, pinnacles, large gargoyles and waterspouts. Stonework is Ham stone in the finer areas, with infill of lime and chert blocks.

Daily: 9am - 5pm.


Chard is on the main A30, (15 miles) from Junction 25 on the M5 at Taunton, and is served by the A358 & A30 itself. The A303 is close by. The church is on the A358 in the Axminster direction opposite The Kings Head public house. Rail: Crewkerne station (8 miles), Axminster station (7 miles). Bus: Hourly service Taunton / Chard A358. Two hourly service Yeovil / Chard A30.
