St Paul, Church Bank, Jarrow, Tyne and Wear NE32 3DZ View on map

Formerly one of two houses in the twin monastery of Wearmouth and Jarrow. Foundation 681-2 with gift by King Ecgfrith to Benedict Biscop, Abbot of Wearmouth; the home of the Venerable Bede. The chancel is the original building on the site and has a window containing the oldest stained glass in western Europe. The dedication stone is the oldest in England.

Opening Arrangements

Open all year but closed from 15th December and for the whole of January. February 1st -March 24th open Monday-Saturday 11am-3pm, Sunday 2pm-3.30pm. Closed Good Friday. March 29th- October 29th open Monday-Saturday 10.30am-3.30pm, Sunday 2pm-4pm. October-December hours as February above.

In Jarrow, on Church Bank north of A185; follow signs to Bede's World. Rail: Bede or Jarrow metro stations (½ mile). Bus: route 27 (from Jarrow bus station).
