St Paul, Church Bank, Jarrow, Tyne and Wear NE32 3DZ View on map

Formerly one of two houses in the twin monastery of Wearmouth and Jarrow. Foundation 681-2 with gift by King Ecgfrith to Benedict Biscop, Abbot of Wearmouth; the home of the Venerable Bede. The chancel is the original building on the site and has a window containing the oldest stained glass in western Europe. The dedication stone is the oldest in England.


Opening Arrangements

1st April - 30th September: Monday - Saturday 10.30am - 3.30pm and Sunday 2pm - 3.30pm. 1st October - 15th December: Monday - Saturday 11am - 3pm and Sunday 2pm - 3.30pm. 5th February - 31st March: Monday - Saturday 11am - 3pm and Sunday 2pm - 3.30pm. The Church is closed to the public 15th December - 4th February but group bookings may still be possible by contacting the Verger, Mr J Guy, on 0191 489 6670.


In Jarrow, on Church Bank north of A185; follow signs to Bede's World. Rail: Bede or Jarrow metro stations (½ mile). Bus: route 27 (from Jarrow bus station).
