The Tyne Theatre & Opera House is Grade I listed with original features such as the auditorium and wooden stage machinery. The north part of the building is located within the boundary of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site. Opened on 24th September 1867, the theatre was designed by William B Parnell for Joseph Cowan politician and industrialist. It represents Victorian period class differentiation with separate entrances, pay boxes, seating and facilities with a common main entrance and box office used today.


Opening Arrangements

The theatre is open for public performances throughout the year. Tours of the building will be available during Heritage Open Days (8th- 11th September). Private group tours are available on request although availability is dependent on the theatres performance schedule. Tours can be arranged by contacting the Trust on 0191 2413986.

Admission Charges

  • Other Charges: Ticket prices for performances vary and start from £10 per person. Tours of the venue vary from free to £3 per person.

Limited on street parking spaces on Westgate Road (50p/hour, maximum 2 hours). Alternative car parking at Grainger Town car park (400 spaces) just off Waterloo Street next to Dance City- Monday-Saturday 8am-6pm= 60p/hour; Sunday £1 all day.
