Newark-on-Trent High Street Heritage Action Zone

Potential to create new homes within the town centre through converting vacant sites and buildings.

Repurposing and re-designing public realm to create more appealing and accessible public space and providing greater connectivity of spaces.

Newark is home to an array of important historic buildings, from the impressive castle and grounds to the Church of St Mary Magdalene, which is one of the finest churches in the county.

The historic core, is centred around the Market Place and contains medieval timber-framed buildings and grander Georgian buildings including the fine Town Hall by John Carr.

Newark has a very attractive town centre which in recent years has faced the same challenges as other market towns with chain stores closing and vacant shops deteriorating. Revitalisation of its central core is essential to regenerate and enhance the historic character of the conservation area.

How the Newark-on-Trent High Street Heritage Action Zone will help

The proposals are intended to hopefully create new homes, and to boost footfall during the daytime and evening thereby enhancing the economy and appealing to families and young people.
