Discover Russell Tovey's Love Letter to the Barbican Centre

This February, we asked well-known personalities to tell us about the buildings they couldn’t live without. Here is a love letter by actor Russell Tovey.

The Barbican is a Grade II listed building.

It’s a very unique and an unusual area of London that many people really should go out of their way to discover. This magical fortress of East London is truly fantastic.

Russell Tovey's love letter to the Barbican

"The Barbican is an intoxicating time capsule in design. I’ve always felt a great surge of appreciation and real comfort for brutalist architecture, since being young and going to the National Theatre on a school trip to see Sweeney Todd and eventually being lucky enough to have worked inside the building, the vast concrete solidity fascinates me. The Barbican is this multiplied with a superb mixture of housing and entertainment.

The Barbican is a walk away from my home and it’s always quiet and calm and walking the high walk to work is the best feeling ever. It’s a very unique and an unusual area of London that many people really should go out of their way to discover. This magical fortress of East London is truly fantastic."
