For the centenary commemorations, our Historic England Archive team have picked out images and drawings relating to the First World War (WW1, WWI or World War One).

Group of convalescent soldiers in their hospital ‘blues’ and their nursing staff
Great Dixter, Northiam, East Sussex. During the war many large landowners offered their homes for use as hospitals and convalescent homes. Great Dixter had been bought in 1910 by Nathaniel Lloyd, and later passed to his son Christopher, the celebrated garden designer. Pictured here is a group of convalescent soldiers in their hospital ‘blues’ and their nursing staff (CC002811)

These images have been drawn from a wide range of different collections, with many coming from the Bedford Lemere collection of architectural photography.

The Historic England Archive in Swindon holds over 12 million photographs and drawings documenting the architectural and archaeological heritage of England.
