Heritage Training Places Scheme
Historic England’s Heritage Training Places scheme is aimed at people who identify as having Black, Asian or other Minority Ethnic Heritage or mixed heritage. It’s part of a suite of training and employment initiatives that we are working on to attract people from all backgrounds who are interested in gaining skills and experience for a career in heritage. These include apprenticeships and post-graduate training. The Heritage Training Places scheme is the one that is specifically aimed at people of BAME heritage.
Historic England founded the Heritage Training Places scheme because our workforce and that of the heritage sector includes an under-representation of people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.In March 2016 the Culture White Paper asked Historic England and other cultural organisations to develop and share strategies for improving workforce diversity. After a successful trial of the Heritage Training Places scheme we opened it up to partners across the heritage sector.
The positions advertised through the Heritage Training Places scheme are training placements and not jobs. Participants do not receive a salary. They are provided with a bursary to cover costs or loss of earnings. The scheme complies with the Equality Act, which enables employers to use training programmes to address under-representation of particular groups in their organisations. Anybody who has taken part in one of these placements and decides they wish to pursue a career with us would need to successfully compete for a job on their merits through our standard recruitment procedures.
