Independent Review of Museums

The Government has published an independent review of museums, led by Neil Mendoza, which outlines key recommendations for how government can support the museums sector in England.

Historic England very much welcomes this Review and we strongly support the recommendations made. We are pleased the Review recognises that historic museum buildings are often as significant as the collections they hold, and that they require expert care and greater investment to deal with a backlog of repairs and maintenance.

The growing problem of lack of storage space for new material recovered through archaeological excavations is a problem we are very familiar with. We look forward to working closely with Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund and other bodies to take forward the recommendations and develop realistic plans that can help tackle these important issues.

Museums and their collections, alongside other heritage assets, make a vital contribution to the health of communities across the country. If realised, the ambition of this Review will help museums flourish and reach their potential.
