National Importance Programme: Lithic Sites Assessment (7046)

Commissioned as one of the National Importance Programme Pilot Projects in 2014, this project investigated how prehistoric lithic sites can be identified, mapped and managed, with Cumbria as the principal study area and a secondary, comparative study of East Anglia. The report places the known resource within a regional landscape context, with a number of case studies which exemplify the problems and issues encountered when defining a lithic site as being of national importance. In response various methodologies are proposed which could be applied to lithic sites in order to understand their significance and a series of recommendations made for further work on the sites discussed in the case studies.
