Edvin Loach Old Church, Edvin Loach, Herefordshire

An aerial view of the old and new churches at Edvin Loach. The Old Church of St Mary dates from the 11th century and stands in ruins. It was built within the earthworks of a Norman motte and bailey castle. The remains of the castle include an earthern motte mound which is circular in plan. The motte is surrounded by a broad ditch from which material for its construction will have been quarried. The new church of St Mary can also be seen, immediately to the west of the old church. It was built in the early part of the 19th century by Mr. E. Higginson. This property is in the care of English Heritage (2011). Find out more.
