Fosters Almshouses, Colston Street, Bristol

Foster's almshouses were founded by John Foster in 1483. He was a Bristol merchant and Mayor. He endowed the premises for 13 men and 13 women. The almshouse were completely rebuilt in 1880-83. The architect, also named John Foster, designed it in the flamboyant French Gothic Revival style with turrets and tall brick chimneys. The street in front of the building was also reconstructed at this time. The old narrow, dark and aptly-named Steep Street became the wider and more upmarket Colston Street.
