Goreus Stone, Fore Street, Yealmpton, Devon

The Goreus Stone is a narrow and flat granite stone (monolith) standing about 5ft 6ins to 6ft tall. It is inscribed on the east face:- 'GOREUS'. It is thought to be a memorial to an early British chieftain or 3rd century tombstone. It formerly lay in the churchyard to the north of the church. It was moved to the present position immediately west of the church in 1851.
