Homes of Rest, Golfe Road, Clementswood, Greater London

This rest home was built in 1910 to designs by Arthur C. Russell of 13 Basinghall Street. It was built for the Sons of Temperance Friendly Society, Pension Almshouse Fund. All the units consisted of a bedroom, living room, scullery and WC. In the days before National Insurance many working people paid regular amounts into a Friendly Society in order to get payments if they were ill or a pension when they stopped working. Friendly Societies were often locally based and run. Many of them were Temperance Societies that required members not to drink alcohol.
