Monument to Jack Crawford, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear
This statue was built in 1889-90 to commemorate Jack Crawford `the sailor who so heroically nailed Admiral Duncan's flag to the main top-gallant mast of HMS Venerable in the glorious action off Camperdown on October 11 1797'. By risking his life to nail the flag it meant that although the ship's mast had been damaged other ships in the fleet knew it was one of their own and not the enemy.
