North Gatehouse to Broomholm Priory, Abbey Street, Bacton, Norfolk
This 15th century gatehouse is all that remains of Broomholm Priory. The priory was founded in 1113 by William de Glanville. It was subordinate to the Cluniac house at Castle Acre. It came under direct Cluniac rule in about 1195. By 1390 it ruled itself. It was closed in 1536 as part of Henry VIII's Dissolution of the monasteries. Part of the ruins were used as a pillbox (gun emplacement) during the Second World War.
