The Convent, Castle Hill Road, Alton, Staffordshire

A.W.N. Pugin constructed this building as a residence for the 16th Earl of Shrewsbury in 1847. The Gothic themed house has since been converted into a preparatory school. The school is part of an important complex of buildings designed by Pugin. It has an architectural style similar to the castles of the Rhine. These castles may have provided inspiration to the architect.
