The Eleanor Cross, Northampton, Northamptonshire

This cross was built in 1291-4 by the kings master mason, John of Battle. It is in memory of Eleanor of Castile, wife of Edward I. Queen Eleanor died on the 28th November 1290 at Harby in Nottinghamshire. Her funeral procession passed from Lincoln to Westminster in December. This cross marks the resting place of Queen Eleanor's body at Delapre Abbey on the night of 8-9th December 1290.
