St John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Dowling Street, Rochdale - Rochdale

Early C20 building designed in early Byzantine style and constructed in 1923-5. Late C20 alterations, but the intended campanile was never built. Constructed from in-situ mass concrete to form the shell of the dome and worship area barrel roofs. Red brick clad with sandstone and concrete dressings. The mosaics to the sanctuary were added in the 1930s. It is in a very busy area near the railway station and has some broken windows. The concrete reinforcement is corroding and blowing off large fragments of the concrete.
