St John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Dowling Street, Rochdale - Rochdale
Early C20 building designed in early Byzantine style and constructed in 1923-5. Late C20 alterations, but the intended campanile was never built. Constructed from in-situ mass concrete to form the shell of the dome and worship area barrel roofs. Red brick clad with sandstone and concrete dressings. The noted mosaics to the sanctuary were added in the 1930s and HE carried out laser scan recording of these in 2020. A recent survey has identified issues with the covering to the roof and dome, causing water ingress, the corrosion of concrete reinforcement and damage to the mosaic.
