Church of St Nicholas, South Road, Grays - Thurrock (UA)

Church dating from the C12 with significant C15 and C19 alterations. West tower, nave, chancel, south and north aisles. North chapel, north porch. Nave roof is leaking and nave plaster ceiling detaching, congregation protected by debris netting. C12 walls in nave treated with emulsion then a restoration paint system. Flaking surfaces abound. Significant concerns about building environment. Excess dampness noted. Offered National Lottery Heritage Fund grant in Spring 2024; staged approach being undertaken. Flint fall from round tower masonry has prompted erection of scaffold.
