Abbey Church of St Mary and St Aldhelm, Market Cross, Malmesbury - Wiltshire (UA)

Malmesbury Abbey (1160-1180) was a massive church with a C14 spire taller than Salisbury Catherdral's but which collapsed in 1479. After the Dissolution everything east of the crossing became ruinous, some of which survives. The current church has six bays of the nave with clerestories, north and south aisles, and a south porch with exceptional Romanesque sculpture. Partial restoration by Goodridge, 1830 and Brakespear 1903. The nave and both aisle roofs are leaking and in need of reroofing and repair of their timber roof structures. Some Romanesque stonework is vulnerable.
