Church of St George in the East, Cannon Street Road, Stepney E1 - Tower Hamlets
The prominent Commissioner's church was designed in an idiosyncratic style by Hawksmoor and completed in 1729. Faced in fine Portland ashlar on brick cores, the interior was gutted during WW2 with only the landmark tower and walls surviving. In 1964 a new church was built within the walls and flats were created above the aisles, accessed through the former gallery stair towers. The aisle roofs are leaking and the exposed exterior walls are suffering from rain ingress. The church is seeking funding for a full repair and development project.
