Cementation furnace, Hoyle Street - Sheffield

Late C19 cementation furnace, brick with wrought iron reinforcement. Conical tower topped with a square flue with an iron flap damper. The sole, intact, survivor of an industrial building once widespread in Sheffield, it remained in use until 1952. The furnace is deteriorating and woody vegetation is growing from the brickwork.
