Church of St Clement Danes, Strand, Westminster WC2 - Westminster, City of
St Clement Danes is a 1681 rebuild by Sir Christopher Wren of an earlier church. Portland stone. At the west end is a tower with steeple added by James Gibbs in 1719, consisting of three octagonal diminishing stages surmounted by a dome. The church was gutted in World War II and restored in the 1950s by Antony Lloyd for the RAF as their church in London. Recent inspections have found serious problems with the stone to the steeple, which is fractured and eroded, necessitating wire strapping and netting to hold it together. Also problems with the lead roofs, which are beginning to fail.
